Panic Attacks

The panic attacks are the response of our body in front of a dangerous situation.

People describe it as sudden feelings of intense fear or anxiety, usually associated with numerous physical symptoms such as heart palpitations, rapid breathing or shortness of breath, blurred vision, dizziness, and racing thoughts. Feel this symptoms  makes them think that they are going to die or that they are getting crazy.

But what really happens during the attacks only it’s that our body has switch on the response of alarm, although we didn’t realize about it.

If the reaction of fear, heart palpitations ‘d happen when someone is threatening us with a knife, we would think that being frightened and have those symptoms is normal,  we would just think in surviving and when the damage it’s over our fear would dissappear.

Our body and mind react with anxiety when we are in a dangerous situation real or imaginary, so just if we think there is damage incoming, our body it’s going to start the response of anxiety and all it’s symptoms as heart palpitations, rapid breathing, tense muscles, pupils dilatation etc.

Anxiety it’s just an emotion but it becames  a problem when appears too often and without a reason. It’s something similar as an alarm of a car that switches on when there’s nobody triying to steal it.  In the same way sometimes, in some people, their “alarm system for danger” starts working, and they react as if they were really going to die, or to lose their mind or control. This can happen without any danger around.

Usually what happened to them it’s a first attack, in it they suddenly felt one or more “new sensations”, but thinking about these symptoms  they made the mistake of believe “this is really weird…” “this is not normal”. This belifes of uncertainty made the anxiety come out, and with it, all the symptoms associated.  But the symptoms of anxiety made the person get more scared and think “This it’s very strange, something wrong it’s happening to me...”. The presence of more symptoms made the anxiety raise, and with more anxiety we have more symptoms, and with those symptoms more anxiety, and here we have the vicious circle of the panic attacks, that’s why we can feel a so high level of anxiety without any objective reason.

Once someone had experience an attack he only focuses in don’t feel those sensations again, usually the person doesn’t know what really happened and why. This makes the uncertainty and the fear of having a new crisis get stronger. So the person uncounsciously tries to prevent the new attack, and focuses in every sensation that might be similar to the ones he felt during the crisis. But as our body works all the time,  it’s common that the heart raise it’s frequency, or to feel any similar sensations to the ones that started the attack, and feeling this sensations makes the person get anxious again cause now he fears the symptoms, and the attacks reappear.

If the crisis happens frequently the pain and fear that cause maybe very restrictive for the person, he feels that it’s losing control and the anxiety may come anytime and it’s going to be permanent, all this interferes in their own lifes and also in their relatives. It can get worst if the person starts to avoid some situations in prevention of the attacks, in those cases it might start an agoraphobia.

But even if go through panic attacks it’s really hard, the good news are that there’s no reason to think that panic disorder it’s a chronic problem, as many people believe. Psychological treatments have improved and proved to be very effective.

The treatment consist in breaking the vicious circle of the attacks, we give new skills to face the crisis and the symptoms, so they can behave in more effective ways than in the past. That why the anxiety level decrease, the response of alarm doesn’t appear and as a consequence the attacks dissappear.

The main idea isn’t to eliminate anxiety, but learn to don’t be afraid of it, as we don’t get scared in front of other emotions.
